Meet The Pros

Joel Novick - Founder and Program Coordinator

A Cape May County Native and the founder of Serves Up Tennis, Joel has extensive experience both playing and coaching tennis. As a high school player, he was consistently ranked among the top players in South Jersey, and led the Middle Township Panthers to their first ever Cape Atlantic League Title. He then moved on to compete for Division III Washington College, where he headed up the Shoreman as Team Captain and MVP. He has also seen his share of success in USTA tournaments, claiming multiple titles in the Middle States Region.

As a coach, Joel was Assistant Coach at Division II Biola University (CA) for five years, coached multiple nationally ranked players and led the Eagles to wins over nationally ranked opponents. Privately, he taught as a PTR certified instructor for nine years, working with players throughout Cape May County and Orange County. Joel has helped numerous players achieve success in high school tennis, USTA Tournaments, as well as the collegiate level. He has also helped numerous recreational players significantly improve their games. He has worked with students ranging from beginners to 5.5 NTPR, and has experience teaching students of all ages.

This is Joel's fourth year at the Avalon Rec with Serves Up; he will be taking an administrative role this summer and is here to help with anything that will make your summer tennis a great experience. 

Tess Fisher - Head Pro

Tess's playing resume speaks for itself: as a three-time National High School All-American, New Jersey State Singles Champion, and the New Jersey High School Tennis Player of the Year, tennis dominated the girls high school arena. She is now in the midst of an exciting college career at Division I Rutgers University, where she plays first singles and first doubles. As a Scarlet Knight, Tess has notched wins over nationally ranked opponents in the Big Ten Conference and received numerous accolades including Big Ten Player of the Week, Team MVP, and Team Captain.

Tess has coached throughout South Jersey, ranging from Vineland to Cape May. She did a fantastic job running many of our clinics and giving countless privates last summer.  We are excited to have Tess back on the team for 2023, and are confident that her mastery of the game and upbeat attitude will make her an excellent coach and hitting partner.

Lily Hanna

Lily is back for 2023 in her second year at Serves Up. A 4-year varsity starter and captain for Haddonfield Memorial High School, her team won the Colonial Conference Championship, South Jersey Group 2 Championship, and reached the state semifinals all four years. Her tournament wins include the South Jersey Interscholastic doubles tournament, the Camden County Singles Tournament, and the Colonial Conference Singles Tournament. She received the SJTCA Group 2-singles award three years in a row. Lily is  a rising Junior at the University of Miami, where she plays on their club team. 

 

As an instructor, Lily worked at the Stone Harbor Recreation Center for 2 years, before coaching clinics and lessons for Serves Up last summer. During the school year she works at the School Yard Tennis Academy in Miami, Florida. Her style is a balance of teaching technical skills and making tennis fun. Lily has a kind and patient personality, and we are thrilled to have her on our team again this summer!

Harry Silverstein

Harry Silverstein is also back in action at Serves Up, bringing with him an incredible amount of coaching experience and wisdom. He is in his 10th year as Stockton University’s Women’s Tennis Coach, where he has led the Ospreys to 8 straight winning seasons and received the NJAC Coach of the Year award. Prior to Stockton, Harry served as head coach for the Vineland High School girls and boys teams for 30 years. His successful career with the Fighting Clan resulted in his induction into the New Jersey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998 and New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Hall of Fame in 2000. Harry was also named Vineland Daily Journal Coach of the Year five times and what named the 2006-07 New Jersey Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association.

Harry has extensive experience coaching privately, running clinics for the Stone Harbor Recreation Department for the past 8 years. He specializes in doubles drills, and loves to coach adults who are either new to the game or looking to refine their skills. We are extremely grateful and excited to have Harry join the team again this summer, and know you will learn a ton from him on the court!

Luis Ortiz

Luis joins Serves Up this summer after a successful career at Rutgers University, bringing with him a wealth of coaching and playing experience. Ortiz played varsity singles and doubles at Vineland High School, a top team in South Jersey, serving as team captain for two years. He went on to play for Rutgers' club tennis team for all 4 years of his education, while competing in Men's Open tournaments for both singles and doubles.

 Luis has spent the past few summers coaching for the Stone Harbor Recreation Department and working part-time for Serves Up. He also has experience giving private lessons in the Cumberland County area. Ortiz has developed extensive knowledge of the game through this experience, and is capable of working with beginners to advanced players in technical training and match-play settings. We are excited to have Luis in a full-time capacity this summer, as he will certainly add solid value to the crew.
 

Lorena Saavedra

This is Lorena’s first summer at Serves Up; she brings an impressive playing and coaching playground to 39th street.  A team captain, conference champion, and CAL Singles champion for Holy Spirit High School, she was just named the Atlantic City Press Player of the Year. Lorena has also competed in Middle States Junior Team Tennis, with her team reaching nationals in the 18 and under division. She is will be attending Franklin & Marshall College next year, continuing her tennis career with the Diplomats. 

 

Lorena has been coaching tennis to kids of all ages for the past two years, running both private lessons and clinics. She is passionate about teaching the sport she loves and is excited to be a part of the Serves Up family!
